Editorial Review
Outfitted in orange and purple, this electronic learning system for preschoolers plugs directly into a television, and at first take looks a lot like a video-game console. Insert any of Vtech's "Smartridges" into the unit for lessons on language, math, phonics, problem-solving, music, and more. Children can choose between two difficulty levels. Included are a large joystick, adjustable to right- and left-handed kids, and an Alphabet Park Adventure cartridge; other cartridges are sold separately. There's also a storage compartment on top that holds up to six cartridges. The system can run on either three C batteries or an AC adaptor; strangely, neither are included. --Andy Boynton

2 of 5 stars  vsmile a bit disappointing
Wednesday, May 11, 2005
I bought the vsmile thinking it looked cute and would be a great way for my child to learn. From the beginning, the controller had a loose part rattling around in it. After about two weeks the "enter" button kept getting stuck. I had to pay shipping to send it back, but it was replaced with a new one. I will be calling tommorrow to have the unit replaced. Often the power button would stay on and now after replacing batteries, the power won't even come on. A bit disappointed at this point because my child rarely got to play with it.

4 of 5 stars  the ac adapter is an absolute must!!!

This is fun for my 3 year old, and every kid that comes in our house wants to play with it and enjoys it, even older children of eleven or twelve years of age. Unfortunately, it has to have an adapter....the large cell batteries required run out very quickly, and as you know, when you were a kid, a toy was useless if the batteries ran down. Additionally, these games are wonderful to teach dexterity and joy-stick control.

2 of 5 stars  Blah Blah Blah

A lot of money for nothing. It is the same old games we have seen for kids on the NES and N64 with two problems- the VSMILE has a VERY limited library. The games and system are expensive and has a very short age range. If you are looking for educational video games- buy a LEAPSTER. OR as I pointed out in my review for the Leapster, try picking up a used Nintendo Entertainment System and cartridges. It is a very easy system to use and you can get any used cartridges for around$2-5.

I say Phooey to the VSmile, it doesn't even offer any new technology. I must admit at first I was taken by its retro style and clever marketing but I think it is overall boring.

1 of 5 stars  disappointed

I was very disappointed in this item. It stopped working 2 weeks after we received it, we returned it to V-Tech and the sent us a new one. After about 3 weeks with the new one it stopped working. I felt the graphics were not very good also there are not many cartridges out there and once my son learned on game he became bored with it.
