Whatever happened to good taste?Wednesday, May 11, 2005
Listening to Rod Stewart sing standards is pure torture. The one good thing is that the writers of these songs or their families are getting some nice royalties as a result of Mr. Stewart's success selling these three volumes of CDs.
Mr. Stewart has always been best as a rock and roll screamer. It takes talent to be a rock front man, and in the 60s he had that talent in spades. What he did in the 70s to 90s seemed to be mostly about caring for his hair and the less said of his music from that time the better.
While Mr. Stewart was a first rate rock singer when he was young, it takes a completely different kind of talent to be a singer of standards. Mr. Stewart is not capable of convincingly singing these songs. He lacks the artistry and subtlety to do them justice.
I congratulate Mr. Stewart on promoting these songs successfully. I wish that the marketplace would be interested in other recordings of these songs because they've been done much better elsewhere.

My Mom likes it.Monday, May 02, 2005
My Mom has nearly every Rod album (and little else...except Joe Cocker). She likes this a lot. I think when people get old they are unable to Rock Out anymore.

It's Like "Night and Day", Rock Star to Crooner Tuesday, April 26, 2005
Twenty years ago who would have ever thought that "Rock Star" Rod Stewart who use to jump all over the stage wearing spandex pants, and filled arenas with thousands of young rock and pop fans, would ever in a million years record a standards album let alone three of them and become a "Crooner". Well this is the exact situation we find ourselves in today.
The song selections for "Stardust...The Great American Songbook: Volume III", is excellent and the use of several other very famous talents on a few of the cuts is a masterstroke and compliments those tracks perfectly. From the songs, to the musicians, to the producer, to the guest artists, this is a 1st class production and lets not forget the unique sound and style of the man himself, Rod Stewart. Some people don't care for Rod's interpretations of these wonderful tunes but if you liked the first two albums from Rod's "Great American Songbook" series you should enjoy this one as well.
Another singer that I also listen to is Monte Procopio. If you enjoy the Big Band sound with swinging arrangements his CD "Swingin' With Style" would also be a good listen.

From Rod The Mod to Soulful Classics Crooner-He does it bestSunday, April 10, 2005
As a very pleased owner of volumes 1 & 2, I was looking forward to the third. I was so excited when it came. As soon as I heard the first song, I was enraptured. This cd is a wonderful listen, and great to slow dance to. It has something for everyone and is definately romantic. Rod scores again. It didn't win a grammy for nothing!!!

You'll Love It -- For Sentimental Reasons!Tuesday, March 29, 2005
While the whole album was well worth the money, I particularly loved the re-make of this old Ink Spots tune. Wow! From the instrumental opening riffs to Rod Stewart's smokey interpretation of For Sentimental Reasons, I was entranced.
