Ol' Dirty Bastard was a rap divinityThursday, May 12, 2005
I'm going to be honest here. I won't pretend (like a lot of people might) that I've been a loyal, die-hard ODB fan ever since the Wu-Tang's inception, because I haven't. I won't say that this entire CD is flawless and wholly astounding, because I believe some of its songs are better than others. What I will say is that I believe Ol' Dirty was the number one Wu-Tang artist (and that's definitely saying something, because all of them are outstanding), and that this solo effort is an extraordinary album. My personal favorite track is "Protect Ya Neck II," followed closely by "Shimmy Shimmy Ya." ODB had a remarkably unique style, and his gruff vocals always command your full attention and never fail to entertain. His premature death was very sad, and now whenever I listen to his songs or his verses in collective Wu-Tang songs, it always evokes some sorrow that he's gone. Still, it doesn't mar his material; nothing could. If you're a pop-rap lover who adores pseudo-rappers like Nelly and Cassidy and spurns the heroes like Snoop (old-school Snoop, that is), Dre, Cube, and the Wu, then this album probably won't suit your tastes. But to the more fastidious rap fans out there: Get this album, along with some of the Wu's other stuff (especially Enter the Wu-Tang).
PS: Don't listen to the insensate naysayers like "Helen." Just look at her naive, gushing reviews for Nelly's "Sweat/Suit." She seems to think that Nelly has a singing voice worthy of idolatry, and that this makes him the finest rapper ever to grace the Earth (...). People like her know NOTHING about rap.

ODB is better than any of these West Coast wack zombies promoting slander in the airtime; Helen from Texas is a loser who bends over for her unemployed Daddy!
Cop this album, yo!

This is one of the best rap albums of all time. Death to all you haters of ODB. And death to you hip hop "elitests" who say that people who consider this album one of the best say that only because ODB is dead. You're just as bad as the ODB haters. All the songs on here are excellent. They might not be considered skillful, whatever that means, but they're enjoyable, funny, raw, and witty. When I first heard these songs, like Shimmy Shimmy Ya, Baby C'mon, and Brooklyn Zoo, I thought ODB was rhyming off beat. After hearing them all many times, I have come to realize there actually is a complex rhyming scheme to them. It sounds kind of sloppy, but there really was thought put into it. Just listen to them a lot. I think you will see if you already haven't. Brooklyn Zoo is one of those songs that gets you really pumped up. Ol' Dirty is the most original rapper in my opinion. He can entertain so well that I bet a lot of his fans aren't really sure why he's so entertaining. Maybe because he goes all out. One of the strangest and best songs on here is Dirty Dancin' featuring Method Man. It made me feel like I was in some kind of evil carnival where madness is the norm! The songs on here range from hilarious to raw and relentless. I don't see how this album can't entertain anyone, unless you really hate hip hop with a passion. Get this album! It's so varied that you won't get bored of it. It's one of my favorites.
P.S. I only have one thing to say to that reviewer "Helen" who reviewed this cd on Jan. 8. Look at her reviews. She listens to Nelly and gave his cd 5 stars. LOL! Enough said.

Old Dirty is DeadSaturday, January 08, 2005
When I heard about a "known" rapper who died I asked my hip-hop loving friend if he was a good rapper, he was great she replied. Well... this wasn't really what she promised, not especially surprising though, her tastes in music is very bad. This album is the biggest failure trying to create a record anyone has ever done. If he hadn't died so recently I would have said that i'm glad over his death, but I'm not going to be disrespectful. But his music was awful that's for sure.
1/5 deserves an even lower score.
