Product Description
Altec Lansing VS2121 2.1 Computer Speaker System (3-Speaker, Black & Silver)
Description
Whether you're listening to music, playing games or watching movies, the Altec Lansing 2.1-channel VS2121 system will bring your entertainment to life--without hogging space or breaking your budget. The system produces 6 watts per channel for each of its 2 satellite speakers with an impressive 16 watts channeled to the subwoofer.

Even the subwoofer is compact, with a 4-inch woofer and ported (bass-reflex) enclosure. As such, it won't produce deep bass: at a deep but not earth-shaking 40 Hz, its output is 10 dB quieter than it is at, say, 150 Hz (the "mid-bass" region). But it should provide the satellite speakers with a greater sense of musical fullness and body than they'd have otherwise.

Altec Lansing's SFX (Sound Field Xpander) Technology widens the stereo image for a bigger sound at the touch of a button (does not work when using headphones). Plus, the speakers' flat-panel design and metallic look make them ideal companions to your flat-panel monitor.

Arrange the satellite speakers to suit your listening tastes--anywhere from right next to your monitor to as far apart as the speaker cords allow. Use the key hole on the back of each speaker to mount them on the wall. For optimum sound, place the speakers at or slightly above ear level.

All stereo-encoded information is heard through the satellite speakers, which are magnetically shielded for distortion-free placement near your TV or monitor. The subwoofer contains no stereo imaging, as its sound is non-directional. As a result, the subwoofer doesn't have to be placed in any particular relationship to the satellites. However, placing the subwoofer on the floor close to a wall or room corner should provide better bass efficiency and optimum sound.

The subwoofer is not magnetically shielded, so be sure to keep it at least 2 feet from TVs, computer monitors, computer hard drives, or any other magnetic media (e.g. floppy disks, Zip disks, computer or audio tapes, etc.).

What's in the Box
Two speakers, 1 subwoofer, a user's manual, a quick-connect card (may be located on internal box flaps), and warranty/registration information.

3 of 5 stars  Nice sound but I've problem with static sound too.
Friday, May 13, 2005
Good sound quality, I don't have much to add to above review, except that in my case I found out what was a cause for the static sound. It was my cordless-phone base. If I move it away from power cable for at least 20 inches than everything is fine. Spent almost an hour trying to figure out what was the cause of the static sound and was about to return them. Other than that I'm happy with my purchase.

Rating would be 5 if not the static sound problem.

2 of 5 stars  Would NOT recommend: Constant static, poor design

Altec Lansing really screwed up on this one (VS2121)... I had read all the reviews about there being some static noise, but I thought I'd be the exception. Wrong.

They may look great, but there is a constant buzzing sound from some kind of interference, and it's a problem with the design, not my setup. The volume control is on the side, so is hard to see, and there is no actual power button, so that static noise will always be there unless you UNPLUG the speakers. I thought the sub sound was not very great, and there it has no volume control.

After owning these speakers for just one week, the right speaker blew out! Now I've exchanged them for the Logitech X-230's.... MUCH better.

Bottomline: skip these Altecs and find something more well-designed.

3 of 5 stars  I hate the subwoofer
Thursday, March 17, 2005
Let me clarify my opinion on this Altec Lansing setup. The sound is great. Works fine on either my laptop or desktop. Okay, I agree with the other reviewers so far.

The trouble is that the subwoofer picks up noise at random from the environment and buzzes, sometimes loudly, for 1 to 10 seconds, because of signals emanating from any cell phone placed within six feet. Sometimes it also makes noises due to a passing car out on the street or who knows what random cause. I would love to turn the subwoofer off except for when I use it, but there is no "OFF" button. Turning the speaker's volume down, or turning the speaker itself off, has NO effect.

All in all, I regret buying this system despite the great sound. It just isn't worth the aggravation of random noises. Altec should have built in protection against the reception of this sort of background noise.

3 of 5 stars  Nice sound up to mid ranges but too much interference
Saturday, January 15, 2005
This is a very affordable, attractive pair of speakers that I bought for my new Dell. They aren't as loud as my old Altec Lansing's, which were actually THX certified but went with the old PC. However, the middle range sounds are very clear and crisp and the bass is more than can be expected in this price range.

The real problem is the interference I get. I think it's from my neighbor's TV. Anyway, what sounds like a TV station comes through the left satellite very faintly. Which means I have to turn my volume up higher to make sure I hear only my music. It's not ideal so I'm probably going to take them back.

However, if I didn't get interference they would probably be a delightful set of speakers for most computers. I'm going to cough up the $150 and get a 2.1 set of Klipsch instead.
