A New Day Has Come
Description
Doubters who expect little from Celine Dion but turgid ballads will be surprised by her return to recording after several years. On A New Day Has Come, the big production numbers most associated with the Canadian superstar's name ("My Heart Will Go On," "Because You Loved Me") are evoked by the two versions of "I Surrender" and somewhat lifeless covers of "At Last" and "Nature Boy." At the same time, though, Dion shows her willingness to stretch on the classic-house homage "Sorry for Love" and the unavoidably catchy "Right in Front of You" and "Ten Days." The album's unexpected, often low-key production allows Dion to emote in a straightforward way that gracefully skirts the chest thumping of past days, and the relative subtlety works in her favor. Still, New Day will hardly prove a shocker for her many fans. Crowning the conservative Dion a forward-thinking diva seems a bit premature, but this agreeable record opens the door to such a possibility. --Rickey Wright

5 of 5 stars  I've waited a long time for the one album to change my life,
Monday, March 21, 2005
and this is certainly it. I purchased this in 2003 on a trip to Canada. I had absolutely no idea what to expect... more love ballads? Any catchy songs? When I scanned the disc under a previewer, I heard the fist single, "A New Day Has Come". I felt like I had heard the most beautiful, intoxicating, inspirational song in the world. It's been over two years, and I still feel as strongly about this album as I did when I purchased it. "A New Day Has Come" (both the song and the album) have changed my life in more ways than one. This album is the most inspirational art I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. The album, in its entirety, is amazing. I only hope that Celine Dion continues to make music as amazing as the songs in this collectoin.

5 of 5 stars  A New Day Has Come by Celine Dion = GORGEOUS

This album is so wonderful. The songs are so catchy you just can't help listening to them over and over again. I recommend it to everyone- if you like Celine or if you're just beginning to like her, it's an album full of beautiful and meaningful lyrics, and makes you want to dance...what's wrong with that?!

3 of 5 stars  Not usually among my favorite artists....
Thursday, November 11, 2004
This is neither my favorite album nor my favorite artist, but I've chosen to review it because it a favorite of my pre-teen-aged daughter, and a couple of the tracks are growing on me. My eleven-year old likes to fall asleep to this CD and she has commented, more than once, that she would like to have a voice like Celine Dion's. Since I'm not a huge fan of Celine Dion, this album surprised me; her voice is relaxed and natural which sets this CD apart from her others that are full of pompous ballads. I don't dislike her voice, primarily because she doesn't have that warbly wannabe voice that most singers seem to have these days. Her voice is angelic and powerful, but I don't think she's quite as polished as Barbara Streisand. I take that back. She probably is as good as Babs, but unlike Ms. Streisand, Celine seems to choose songs that showcase her talent, while Barbara Streisand uses her voice to showcase what she sings.
Nevertheless, I cannot deny that there is magic in Celine's music, with the power to transform because of her graceful manner of showing emotion in some of these songs, especially, "Goodbye's" and "Prayer." Her angelic voice is subtle, yet vigorous and powerful. I sometimes find myself silently singing the lyrics to "Goodbye's (the Saddest Word)," a song about a mother's farewell to a grown child who has rediscovered her love for her mother, beceause she has recently given birth to a child of her own. Celine sings this song with passion and tenderness, and I was particularly impressed by the soaring key changes (two of them). It helps, also, that Shania Twain sings backup vocals for this track.
This is a long album; it feels like more meaty than the sixteen versatile cuts on it. The first couple of songs didn't impress me: "I'm Alive," is new-age-like with a dance flavor, and "Right in Front of You" is a light pop tune with an upbeat tempo. "Have You Ever Been in Love" begins in typical Celine Dion ballad fashion, that begins with a light piano and her voice at low and sleepy pitches. However, she builds up to a crescendo that begins to give one the sense of the power that she's harnessing. This is the first song where we hear her soaring key ranges, but the song is too smooth for my taste.
One of my daughter's favorites is "Rain, Tax (It's Inevitable)." The music in this song has a little bit techo-type of quality, especially in the beginning, with a lot of syncopation. Sure, she belts out a few lines sort of like Cher, and the tune is a bit catchy, but her voice doesn't do anything special yet. "A New Day Has Come (Radio Remix)" reminds me a little of Enya, but not quite as angelic. "Ten Days" begins with acoustic guitar and has a strong steady beat, but doesn't have much more to offer.
"Goodbye's (The Saddest Word)" is a touching ballad that Celine sings with passion and power that moves me every time I hear it, but the next song, "Prayer" showcases her talent. It is another ballad that is loaded with emotional power. She's just warming up, though, and sings "I Surrender" with such drama that my heart is touched. In this song, we get a sense of Celine's talent. Her strength lies in her wide vocal range (again, not quite as wide as Barbara Streisand, but wide enough that it merits a mention) and her ability to hold those high notes for long periods of time. In this song, she bridges the high notes beautifully and with a subtle beauty. This song begins slow and ballad-like, but the tempo picks up and syncopation is added to make it almost danceable. She begins to unleash the power of her vocal chords in this song, in a passionate and dramatic fashion that is moving.
I usually cringe when I hear remakes, but I was surprised by the freshness that Celine Dion brought to "At Last," a beautiful old ballad that begins at low pitches with a steady rhythmic beat that has a blues-like tone sung with tenderness.
"Sorry for Love" sounds like techno-Cher at her best. I was most impressed by how long she can hold, not just a note, but a high note, without faltering, which she holds for 16 (count them) seconds. "When the Wrong One Loves You Right" is an upbeat, syncopated, almost danceable track, that features some high notes toward the end. "A New Day Has Come" is a ballad with its highlight of layered vocals in the chorus that gives this song an almost Enya-like quality, although Celine's angelic voice is unmistakeable. The harmony in this song is also pleasant. Overall, it is upbeat yet relaxing.
I'll summarize with a little bit of triviality. In all, there are eight or nine dance-type songs, nine love ballads, and a couple of light pop music tracks. In addition, the word "love" is mentioned over 50 times, "heart" over a dozen times, and spiritual references such as "angel," "spirit," or "God," at least 25 times. Most impressive are the 7 or so soaring key changes, two of which occur in "Goodbye's"

5 of 5 stars  Celine's Amazing Comeback
Sunday, October 10, 2004
After a couple of years hiatus to spend precious time to welcome little Rene Charles into her family, Celine invites us into her world with A New Day Has Come, an intimate and moving portrait of her life to date.

Immediately you can sense we are listening to a more natural, relaxed and joyous Celine (for obvious reasons.) Her voice seems to have a new effortless tenderness and, though not written by her personally, the lyrics in all of the tracks are a perfect reflection of this new chapter in her life.

From the beautiful, soaring uptempo opening track "I'm Alive" through poignant, emotional ballads (such as "Goodbye's The Saddest Word" and "The Greatest Reward") and upbeat pop gems (like "Rain, Tax" and "When the Wrong One Loves You Right"), A New Day Has Come showcases why Celine's phenomenal talent has sold millions of albums worldwide.

What sets this album apart from Celine's previous releases, is the experimentation with many different musical styles - all of which reflect THAT voice in their own special way.

Of course you couldn't have a Celine Dion album without the power ballads ("I Surrender" is a stunning display of Celine's incredible vocal ability)...but we wouldn't have it any other way! There's also covers of old-time classics ("At Last" and "Nature Boy" with a contemporary twist) - and whoever would have pictured Celine as a dance-floor diva? ("Sorry For Love" leaves Cher's "Believe" for dead!) Perhaps the most un-typically Celine track on the album is the sensational "10 Days" - a smooth, groovy, upbeat ditty that you would probably expect more from the likes of Sheryl Crowe or even Norah Jones!

Two versions of the gorgeous title track (I personally prefer the acoustic version), plus an exquisite collection of intimate family photos included within the breath-takingly beautiful CD cover and booklet, complete the package.

Welcome back, Celine!

5 of 5 stars  Superb

From jazz, to pop, to rock, to techno dance, to R&B, to a spanish ballad... Everything you need from Céline you'll find it on this album. A MUST!
I'll review song by song:
1) I'm Alive: 95/100 - A great upbeat song with a catchy melody, light and positive!

2) Right In Front Of You: 85/100 - A pop song, nice melody and lyrics

3) Have You Ever Been In Love: 85/100 - A nice ballad, very celinish! for her long-time fans!

4) Rain, Tax (Its Inevitable): 90/100 - Wow! This is Céline trying a new Techno R&B style, and it fits her wonderfully! Just try this one!

5) A New Day Has Come (Radio Remix): 98/100 - I'm pretty sure everyone has heard this song! Its a touching pop-like song - I just adore it! And her lyrics and melody are so amazing!

6)Ten Days: 100/100 : Yeah! Céline the rocker has come! This is Céline's first try with an english "rocky" song. She has already tried it in french, but this one is a great song, listen to it!

7)Goodbye's (The Saddest Word): 96/100: Ok, this is (as the title says) the saddest song on the album. A very powerful ballad written by Mutt Lange, with SHANIA TWAIN singing backvocals, and it talks about a mother's love for her child, and the day our mother will leave us. moving...

8) Prayer: 90/100: This one is one of my favourites, the sweetest song on the album. Its a ballad and it kinda' talks about children and nature, like poetry!

9) I Surrender: 100/100 : OMG! For the ones who were waiting for a strong ballad, here its your turn! Wow, one of the best songs on the album (if not the best), Céline shows all her vocal ability holding notes and with an incredible bridge. A MUST!

10) At Last: 70/100 : MMM, its a cover ... an old song, Céline performance is very good, but the song is old-fashoned

11) Sorry For Love: 98/100 Is it Cher or Céline? Yes! for those who have heard Cher's song BELIEVE you know what i am talking about. Wanna listen to Céline Dion with all those "techno" effects? Listen to this song and watch too Céline holding a 16 seconds high note! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

12) Aún Existe Amor: 95/100 This is a cover from her french song L'AMOUR EXISTE ENCORE. But she performs it beautifully, and IN SPANISH! It has new arrangements , and it has become one of my favourites, a very beautiful ballad

13) The Greatest Reward: 80/100 : A nice ballad.

14) When The Wrong One Loves You Right: 90/100 Another perfect example of Céline "pop" ability. Its a "Backstreet-boys"-like song with a very catchy melody and great choruses... She also hits very high notes at the end

16) A New day has come: 100/100 This is the album version of the song... Its a very nice ballad.. where Céline sounds almost like Enya. Its new for her, but still great!

17) Nature Boy: 0/100 Too slow, stupid lyrics.

I MUST SAY ITS AN AMAZING ALBUM! I THINK EVERYONE WHO LIKES CELINE MUST OWN IT! Give it a try buddy! :) You won't regret!
