King Solomon's Mines
Description
Camp and cult fans may get a few laughs from this tongue-in-cheek version of the classic H. Rider Haggard adventure novel from '80s low-budget outfit Cannon Films. Richard Chamberlain gives a pun-prone take on Great White Hunter Allen Quatermain, who is recruited by Sharon Stone to rescue her father from the clutches of a German colonel (Herbert Lom) and a Turkish slaver (John Rhys-Davies), who have captured him to possess his map to the legendary diamond mines of King Solomon. Director J. Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone) and the game cast do what they can with the dodgy special effects and groaner-filled script; viewers who don't mind sub-par serial-style thrills might find some kicks here. --Paul Gaita

3 of 5 stars  Sexy girl - compromising positions - lame execution
Thursday, April 14, 2005
This poor attempt at movie making takes the title of an excellent book by H. Rider Haggard. Add lots of sex and action at the expense of the story and characters. Richard Chamberlain gets to practice his judo positions. Sharon Stone practices other positions before she became famous. On the plus side they did re-introduce Gagoola; she was conspicuously missing form the 1950 Deborah Kerr version. Yet if they did not make this so campy it would have been laughed off the screen.

Jesse Huston (Sharon Stone) convinces Great White Hunter Allan Quatermain (Richard Chamberlain) to free her father from the clutches of a dastardly pare of bad guys. All they want is her father's map to King Solomon's Mines. Jesse and Allan go through many trials and tribulations in the process.

I will not mention the different trials as part of the fun is the shock value of surprise. However I will say that this may be worth watching so tat you will appreciate the fine production of the 1950 Deborah Kerr version, and better still the original book.

5 of 5 stars  A fun loving, hilarious adventure that really entertains
Friday, July 30, 2004
Vastly superior to its rather lackluster sequel ALLAN QUATERMAIN AND THER LOST CITY OF GOLD (which was actually filmed back-to-back with this production), this entertaining and fun loving tribute (or some might say rip-off) of the Indiana Jones movies benefits (unlike its follow-up) by the sure hand and capable direction of veteran J. Lee Thompson (of the original GUNS OF NAVARONE) and a suberp supporting cast that includes the always entertaining and eminently watchable John Rhys-Davies and Herbert Lom as the two main villains, a Turkish slaver and a World War I era German Colonel respectively.
Based very loosely on the classic H. Rider Haggard adventure novel of the same name, this movie features Richard Chamberlain as adventurer Allan Quaterman who is recruited by the sexy and gorgeous Jessie Huston (played by a pre-famous Sharon Stone) to rescue her father who has fallen into the villains hands in attempt to locate the fabled King Solomon's mines.
What follows is a fast paced, fun and thoroughly entertaining adventure with some eye popping stunts and some truly cheesy special effects.
No matter though, this movie promises high adventure and entertaining escapism. Movie fans will have fun spotting references to other movies of the 1980s from the Indiana Jones adventures to 1983s FOOTLOOSE and that movies game of unintentional chicken.
I was one of the (evidently) few who actually made it to see this movie in the theaters on its release in 1985 and one who instantly picked it up on VHS. Of course when the DVD was released in February of this year I was there to instantly pick it up. Still fun after almost 20 years this DVD comes well recommended.

5 of 5 stars  FUN - FAST-PACED - FUNNY- FANTASTIC!

This movie is hilarious! Richard Chamberlain fans will thrill to watch their favorite actor as a comedian. In addition, to all the other roles, he has played to perfection, he can nail comedy, and in this film he delivers some very funny lines, in his dry, understated style. Half the fun for me, was watching him play against type, and laughing myself sick over his superb performance. He was not only funny, but the man was simply amazing, with the physical prowess of a 25 year old. He jumped over roof tops, swung from buildings and ropes, fell down waterfalls and mountains, hopped on and off and under moving trains, chased after a run-a-way airplane, and he was 51 years old when he made this film! He must have been exhausted. He is physically gorgeous as always, looking 20 years younger than his actual age.

He has terrific on-screen chemistry with Sharon Stone, who is sexy, and funny as Jessie Huston, his love interest and fellow adventurer. John Rhys-Davies plays Dogati, and as usual, is just sheer magic. He and Richard had the same great on-screen chemistry in Shogun, where Rhys-Davies played the wonderful Rodrigues. This movie has wonderful actors, is fun, funny, fast-paced, action packed, and has an exciting musical score, that greatly complements this delightful spoof.

You will laugh and laugh as Allen and Jessie fight Nazi's, cannibals, ferocious wild animals and reptiles, get captured by the upside down tree dwellers, thrown into a crock pot, saved from a pit of crocks, maneuver run-a-way airplanes and vehicles, and finally fall in love. They find danger, adventure, excitement, romance, and best of all they find KING SOLOMON'S MINE. If only the director of THE INDIANA JONES SERIES, would have cast the wonderful, versatile, Richard Chamberlain instead of Harrison Ford. Just think about it.....what if?

4 of 5 stars  Comic book
Monday, July 12, 2004
All of those I see who deem this a "Indiana Jones" rip off aren't too swift! The indy films were actually rip offs of these stories which were written in the 1800's. This film is pretty good, it is VERY comic book with the acting, sets, effects and storyline. If you are a child of anything later than the 80s then you won't "get" this film. If you can't simply enjoy a film that is "family" oriented so be it. But many people enjoyed this film when it came out and still do! Its a fun romp similiar to the Indy films but with more cheeky humor. Sharon Stone takes on her early role and is quite silly and fun.

5 of 5 stars  FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY!

I laughed through this whole movie. I'd never seen Chamberlain and Stone in a comedy before this. I thought it would just be an adventure movie, but it's not. It's so crazy! I couldn't believe my eyes! I enjoyed it, but I can't even begin to find the words to describe this film. You've really got to see this for yourself.
