Bubble Boy
Description
Innocuous, innocent, and somewhat idiotic, Disney's bubbleheaded road-movie comedy plays as a farcical remake of the 1976 cult TV-movie melodrama The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. Jake Gyllenhaal is the goodhearted innocent raised in a sort of human Habitrail of plastic rooms and rubber tunnels. To win back the girl of his dreams (Marley Shelton), he steps out of his indoor greenhouse and into a homemade Ziplock bubble suit. It's the usual story: naive innocent bounces down the highway like a beach ball with legs and wins over the wacky supporting cast of soft-hearted bikers, zombielike teenage cultists, and orphaned "freaks" through purity and pluck. The premise wears thin after a while, but Gyllenhaal keeps the film bounding along with goofy innocence and energetic eagerness. Swoosie Kurtz costars as his religious-zealot clinging mom. Watch for Fabio in an inspired cameo. --Sean Axmaker

5 of 5 stars  Great Comedy

I first watched this movie on a Grayhound trip to New York. I loved it, and also this was the first time I saw Marley Shelton. She is a great actress and an astonishingly beautiful woman.

4 of 5 stars  Adrian Monk oughta take a hint from this movie

If anyone has Tony Shalhoub as the obsessive compulsive detective Monk on USA, you'll see that he is like the Bubble Boy (afraid of germs). Maybe the writers can have Mr. Monk solve murder mysteries in a plastic bubble.

5 of 5 stars  Outrageously Funny!
Thursday, October 07, 2004
I am a huge comedy fan, and this is one to die for. It is wacky, creative, inspiring and even touching. It is about a boy (Jake Gyllenhall) named Jimmy Livingston who was born without immunities, so even one germ could kill him. He lives in Palmdale with his overprotective mother (Swoosie Kurtz) and rather quiet father. He is doing well in his bubble room until he meets Chloe (Marley Shelton), the girl next door, and falls madly in love with her. But after a while, Chloe goes off to get married in Niagra Falls. Having only three days to get there, Jimmy builds a protective "bubble suit" and sets off on an insane journey to the other side of the country! With hilarious figures along the way and non-stop laughs, Bubble Boy is a must-see!

4 of 5 stars  The title says it all!

This movie is about a boy who lives in a plastic bubble. He'd die if he was exposed to open air. But,he meets and falls in love with a girl who'd marry him in the last scene. One funny scene was where the boy was alone on a tour bus in motion. Cool film,I must admit.

4 of 5 stars  bright and shiny

This movie really suprised me. You really want to root jimmy on. Here is a kid who is born with a horrible disease, and he overcomes that just so he can live life and pursue love. I found the bubble to represent more what holds us all back and we need to break out to live life to its fullest. Some will get offended by some of the stereotypes. But, in the end, you really love all the characters and they all care about each other. If you liked films like, Saving Silverman or Old School, this might be for you.
