Poison Ivy
Description
Sight unseen, it's tempting to dismiss Poison Ivy as a teen variation on your standard trashy erotic thriller, a genre born with such promise in Body Heat that has since been in steady devolution. But while Ivy is no Heat, it's better than virtually any of those movies that star someone named Shannon. Crisp directing is supported by a script that takes a smart look at dysfunctional family dynamics, but most of all, it's the performances. Much has been made of Drew Barrymore's perfect casting as the title character, but she also does a sneaky and subtle job of straddling the fence: is Ivy a desperate, lonely young woman, an evil barracuda, or both? Tom Skerritt matches her step for step, playing the fallen husband as both hopelessly vain boob and genuinely lost soul. Cheryl Ladd delivers a sharp, minimalist performance as his Beverly Hills trophy wife dying of emphysema--becoming the still-life center of everyone else's life. And Sara Gilbert does a fine job in a role that gives her all the heavy lifting, playing tortured straight man to this pathetic and compelling tree full of coconuts. This DVD features both R-rated and unrated versions. The latter shows a bit more skin, although it's still fairly tame compared to the average skin flick. It also leaves Ivy a bit more ambiguous, and is thus a bit more fun. --Geof Miller

5 of 5 stars  This Movie Should Teach Guys Something!
Thursday, May 12, 2005
This movie has everything going for it for a seductive thriller. The genre of lady killers I think is pheonomenal, and this movie is best comparable to The Crush(Alicia Silverstone)... In it's success and it's entire entertainment.
What I like first of all, is the director Katt Shea. Directing another rare successful thriller later on in her career, The Rage: Carrie 2(Emily Bergl, Jason London).
Sara Gilbert best known as the lazy trouble making daughter Darlene, on the hit tv series Roseanne. Definitely did her best movie as the quiet shy lonely co-star in Poison Ivy. Drew Barrymore got her career start right here, as the seductive maniacal stranger who becomes best friends with Sara Gilbert. Drew Barrymore later went on to fall in small roles such as Batman Forever and Scream... now best known as one of Charlie's Angels. Tom Skerritt, the father of Sara Gilbert I thought played a great supporting role. Being seduced by Barrymore losing his marriage, his daughter's trust... taken over by Drew Barrymore completely. I thought Skerritts best movies and characters were in Alien, Up In Smoke, and Top Gun.
In 5.1 with an unrated version on the DVD, there's nothing else you can ask for. The action in this movie is very slim... it's more of a thriller building you up by suspense and seduction, just like The Crush did. You don't have a lot of sexual scenes, that's one reason why this movie stays true... compared to Poison Ivy 2 and 3.
This movie is no Basic Instinct(Sharon Stone), it's no Fatal Attraction(Glenn Close). This movie has no blood no gore, and breif nudity if that. So how can this be a good thriller? well that's why you got to watch it, it should be good to buy for a lot of you. Poison Ivy, was one of the surprises of the early 90's... or at least it was to me.

4 of 5 stars  Dangreous and Hot
Saturday, April 23, 2005
Ivy is the new, crazy girl in school. Sylvie is the lonesome, geeky, rich girl. Once Ivy and Sylvie meet, they become pretty good pals. Sylvie invites her to ride home, she also invites Ivy into her house. She was making a deadly mistake.

Anyone can tell that something is definitely odd about Ivy, but she is charming to anyone around her. Sylvie's sick mother is always depressed, but when Ivy comes along, Sylvie's mother starts to love Ivy. Sylvie's dad is really starting to get closer to Ivy, too. But Sylvie herself starts to regret the day that she talked to Ivy, because Ivy is starting to ruin her life. But Ivy wants to stay in Sylvie's house, and whatever Ivy wants, Ivy gets.

This movie was really entertaining throughout the whole thing, and it always kept you wondering what horrible thing that the misuderstood Ivy was going to do next. You were always trying to understand Ivy, wanting to know more about this strong character. This movie was chilling and definitely sexy, and overall, it's a good film.

3 of 5 stars  Is it good?
Thursday, April 21, 2005
My Granddaughter is 15 and wants this movie. She said that she's seen it before and that it is a lot like "The Crush" with Cary Elwes and Alicia Silverstone. Should I let her get it? I need a quick answer!

4 of 5 stars  AN ATMOSPHERIC GEM...
Tuesday, March 15, 2005
I love this movie; the atmosphere is so weird and freaky, yet comforting in an odd sort of way. It's perfect for those late nights when you're watching Cable; Springtime usually brings this movie back to mind, like, 'cause during early spring the sky has kind of a light-blue tinge to it and the air always seems just as blue. The cinematography in this film has a lot of blue as well as other more hard-to-define colors, including variations of the color blue. The script is also good, although it has plenty of holes in it. The holes aren't noticable if you're not too uptight to keep from being The Godly Commentator. It flows nicely if you can keep from THINKING about it!; if you can just let your emotions go with it...ya know? I didn't give this 5 stars, 'cause there are other films that are A LOT better, in atmosphere & script. Not only that, but many people probably wouldn't like this film and there's no "real" reason why they should. It's not a life-changing film, it's not a "socially conscious" film, it's not inteligent, it has no appealing qualities except those that will no doubt effect certain "types" of people...like me, for instance. At certain times when the atmosphere of the day is just right, I will find myself yurning to watch this film and thus celebrate the beautiful yet gloomy air of those certain days in early Spring.

4 of 5 stars  Where is Leonardo di Caprio in the movie?
Saturday, February 12, 2005
The ending credits listed Leonardo di Caprio as "Guy" (and in Leo's filmography Poison Ivy is always on the list). My wife and I tried rewinding, fast-fowarding, and pausing the film many times but we can't find Leonardo in the movie. Can anyone help us? Thank you.
