Heat
Description
Oscar Lopez's 1997 release challenges the Strunz & Farahs and Ottmar Lieberts of the world head on. Full of flamenco-inspired nylon-string guitar themes fleshed out with fiery improvisations, Heat largely eschews traditional flamenco compas for more straight-ahead, relaxed rhythms, backed by acoustic bass and percussion. But the Santiago, Chile-born Lopez is considerably more comfortable with flamenco puro than is Liebert, as his dynamic and fairly virtuosic "Fuego y Furia" attests. Like those of Strunz & Farah, his compositions are more pan-Latin than strictly flamenco, giving the buoyant "Fiesta Latina" and "Distancia" a hearty, authentic feel, which is coupled with a clear, sober production that brings Lopez's percussive guitar tone to the fore. --James Rotondi

3 of 5 stars  Good Guitarist not in the right place
Tuesday, November 09, 2004
Oscar plays it very nice and fast..but the type of music is not suitable for his style, the music is too soft, it is better for oscar to play with a different style of music, i think playing solea will be very good for him or harder music maybe like Strunz and Farah will be very much suitable for him

3 of 5 stars  It's okay, but...
Wednesday, October 17, 2001
I got this CD as a donation gift for supporting my local public radio station (KUHF 88.7), and it was a worthwhile recompense for my donation dollars. I like it well enough--it's not
bad, by any measure. Other reviewers have pointed out that it's not "true" Flamenco. I don't especially care...it sounds nice, I like it, nuff said. But to be completely honest, I would more quickly reach for 1) The Gypsy Kings 2) Jessie Cook 3) Willy and Lobo (not necessarily in that order) if I was suddenly moved to want to hear some "Latin" sounds. I used to put HEAT in the CD player when I wanted some nice background/mood music get me in the mood to do my Spanish homework. (Even though Jessie Cook is a total gringo [hey, so am i], the man can work a guitar pretty darn good!)...but to be fair if someone asked me to go to see Oscar Lopez perform live somewhere, I'd go along.
HEAT makes a good first CD if you are just getting in to the various kinds of music of the Spanish-speaking world.

2 of 5 stars  Ok, but Armik is the best!!!
Friday, September 14, 2001
I listned to this cd. its ok. the mElodies are ok, not that good. sort of close to flamenco. Very close to it. I know this is not pure flamenco, but the tunes should be there. Only one or two are nice. rest just goes on. I suggest that people who like this type of music should try Armik. He is really a genius in composing. He makes melodies. he is out of this world. He make pure melodies. No thrash. He is really a professinal. His music really has passion. the guitar sort of begs wanting something which captures in your heart. Try him, you will forget oscar and everybody else. He is the master composer!!!

5 of 5 stars  I was swept away ...
Monday, September 18, 2000
I was totally enthralled with this CD. Passion reverberates in every strum, tap and pick that Oscar does. He turns my room into a fiesta of heavenly sounds and conjures all images of humanity in a single sweep. Every time I hear 'Tornado de Amor' I can't help but rejoice and weep at the same time, what a beautiful, demanding piece of music. What an amazing performer.
