Product Description
The Cider House Rules: Music from the Miramax Motion Picture
Description
With its idyllic New England locales and multiple themes, director Lasse Hallstrom's version of John Irving's book presented composer Rachel Portman with some challenging, if deceptively simple, choices. Portman's main theme (imagine a pastoral Copland waltz), stated by solo piano and then orchestra, sets us firmly in the tranquil Maine countryside, while permutations of it continually shade the film's various dramatic intentions. It's a simple, time-honored device, yet one that carries the implicit danger of Repetitive Schmaltz Syndrome. But Portman's melodic construction here is so strong, and her arranging skills so multihued, that she ultimately pulls off the tricky balancing act and delivers a rewarding listening experience. --Jerry McCulley

What's the song that has the oooOooh oooOOooh? The strings are nicely accompanied by this lovely voice. It has a lot of depth.

5 of 5 stars  I don't know what to say
Sunday, August 12, 2001
I don't know what to say. This soundtrack is simply beautiful, touching and extraordinarily expressive. I'm sure Rachel Portman is one of the best hollywood composer's. If you like soft music, you'll like it. This music is now soft now vehement, playng by piano and orchestra. This soundtrack had an oscar nomination, had ONLY an oscar nomination, because It must win an oscar!

P.S. Excuse for my english:I'm Italian

5 of 5 stars  Rachel Portman Rules!
Saturday, June 23, 2001
This music is incredibly simple yet equally complex. Aside from the gorgeous glimpses of New England in the fall, I didn't care for the film at all; but (pardon the pun) the simplicity of the main theme struck a chord with me. Only after seeing the movie a second time and having Portman's music infect my mind for days after did I feel the need to add this CD to my collection. Portman's score is very emotional. I suppose the beauty and draw of any good movie score is its ability to transport your mind back to scenes in the film itself. While Portman's music can certainly achieve that end for a listener in such a frame of mind, it also stands alone quite well and can serve, in a sense, as the score to one's own life. The emotions of wonder, love, loss, turmoil, and joy that Homer experienced in the film are universal. As Portman's score appropriately paints the backdrop to Homer and the others' experiences in the film, it also resonates deeper and causes me to reflect a bit on my own life. Don't just listen and let the music fade into the background as you do some other activity -- let listening be the activity. You will smile!

This is a pretty score. I never saw the movie but, I read the book. I really like Rachel Portman's work on "Emma" so, I bought this and I am satisified.

5 of 5 stars  An Amazing Achievement !!
Tuesday, January 02, 2001
Well, Rachel Portman has done it again! And this tops her outstanding list of scores! Her simple yet, beautiful score for "The Cider House Rules" is a stirring, and touching work of art! Her recurring theme will bring tears to the eyes of those who were enchanted with the film, as I was! As soon as I saw the movie, I had to have the cd! I went directly from the theatre, to the record store to buy it! And I listened to my favorite track, the first one in my car on the way back to the theatre to see the movie again! This is a must have for any classical music lover! Portman does amazingly well with a piano, and a string quartet to bring the movie to life in our minds! Get it today, you will NOT regret it!
