A Clone Worth HavingWednesday, December 31, 2003
A great collaboration! I can't wait to hear more. Kottke and Gordon make a great pair, an odd couple that have obviously found kindred spirits in each other, in their quirky song selection and lucid interwoven acoustic instrumentation. I feel Kottke is better off with someone to play against, keeping the sound more varied, and what Gordon brings to the mix with his wonderful songs, singing and bass sound is equally playful and new. Perhaps when the Gods clone their creations they come out as delightful recordings like this...I'm glad I got one.

Sometimes You Win...Monday, September 22, 2003
And sometimes you lose. Kottke is always pushing the envelope, never making the same album twice. He has tried lots of experiments over the years -- within the limitations of being a virtuoso guitar player who doesn't read music and rarely plays anybody's music but his own.
Sometimes his experiments shine ("Dreams and All That Stuff") and sometimes they bomb (Kottke with orchestra, which remains unreleased to this day).
"Clone" is in the latter category. Sure, it sounds like Leo and Mike Gordon had a lot of fun in the studio, but their two radically-different styles never gel. The material here is not vintage Kottke, and is probably weaker than Mike's usual too.
If you're new to Kottke, don't start here. This is for completists like me only -- and I've already played it all I probably ever will.

Very unique collaborationMonday, April 14, 2003
I'm a big Phish-head and a bass player, but i'd heard a little Leo before and was aware of his history. This disc has a playful vibe, and features several very memorable tunes. I like the instrumentals a lot, but the highlights are the Mike-sung tunes. Anybody who likes Train song, Weigh, or Scent of a Mule will like this CD....

Smells PhishySunday, March 16, 2003
I bought this CD based on some reviews I read, I really wanted something by Leo, and the fact that it's HDCD decoded. I've only listened to it a few times. But I'm pretty disappointed by what I've heard. I'm not sure I can get myself to listen to it anymore. I will echo another comment that much of it is just too Phishy. Just really silly stuff, and not silly in a good way.

Destined to be considered a classicSunday, March 09, 2003
Absolutely fabulous. Those of us who have listened to Leo Kottke for years know he is unique, gifted and prolific, and have treasured his music. With so many years passing and so much time for him to play and for us to listen, there are ups and downs. _Clones_ is an up for Leo.
Mike Gordon's input and contributions refresh and give another dimension to the tradional Kottke writing and singing. Definitely a CD with Leo Kottke all over it, nonetheless more than Leo--thanks to the wisdom of the two of them to recognise like-minded musicians in each others' music and lyrics.
A very big breath of very fresh air because Mike's contributions are as important to the music as Leo's. A real collaboration, one of those rare recordings that really is a creation of something new, lyrically and musically, because of the combination of two distinct musicans on the same page at the same time!
Wow!
