Product Description
The Master 1961-1984
Description
The cover shot for this four-disc box is a floating image of hands outstretched, desperate to touch "The Master"--a suggestion that might be blasphemous if this weren't Marvin Gaye, one of the most impassioned, visionary, and masterful singers who ever lived, and one who inspired intense devotion among his millions of fans. The Master reveres Gaye with 89 selections, 32 of them hits, including classic solo recordings from "Hitch Hike" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" to the stunning "What's Goin' On" and "Sexual Healing," not to mention a "The Lord's Prayer" that makes clear what Master Gaye's divine voice was forever striving to reach. --David Cantwell

5 of 5 stars  Quite a collection
Tuesday, September 28, 2004
If you are as big a Marvin Gaye fan as I am, this is THE collection to own. Four discs of great music from probably the finest musician of our time not named Stevie Wonder. From the beginning of his career to his untimely death at the hands of his father. This is a must have. I especially enjoy the third disc, which contains "What's Going On?", 'Mercy Mercy Me", and "After The Dance".

5 of 5 stars  The True Anthology Of An R&B/Soul Legend!
Thursday, June 17, 2004
This is by far the most superior collection of Marvin Gaye's hits ever assembled! It has virtually every song he ever made from the beginning of his career up until his tragic death in 1984! Like most collections, it'll miss a few songs here and ther but other than that, it doesn't get much better than this!

If you are a true Marvin Gaye fan (like me) or if you want to be initiated, get this set. Again, rarities, previously unreleased material and alternative versions exists here. Add this to your library.

5 of 5 stars  The Master 1961-1984 is a great Marvin Gaye Package
Saturday, December 28, 2002
The Master 1961-1984 documents Marvin's entire career. The package has 4 discs that are mastered greatly, a book with rare pictures, songs, discography, singles, and a long essay. It has a great design. It has 90 tracks with a bonus track from the 1976 I Want You sessions. This package is filled with Marvin's career as a singer, writer, a somewhat actor.
