Play (Mini Album)
Description
Composed of winners of talent contests and the star of the Scandinavian film Adam and Eve, the Swedish quartet Play strut the kind of girl power not seen since the emergence of the Spice Girls. But it may not be evident from their music, which is generic, synth-laden Europop buffed with slick R&B beats and polished harmonies occasionally marked by flashes of charm ("Disco Hippie"). The nasally vocals and tinny background of a wan version of Olivia Newton-John's "Hopelessly Devoted to You" is more the norm. The group's spunky lyrics, however, push the tunes beyond purely inoffensive Top 40 techno lite. No wallflowers sitting at home pining after the boy next door, the girls champion independence, self-reliance, and pride on tracks like "Us Against the World," "Cinderella," and "I Don't Get Down Like That." Such positive messages give Play's music a much-needed injection of attitude and originality. --Annie Zaleski

4 of 5 stars  Not bad.

I love Play, but this mini-album isn't their best. Aimed at younger girls in the teeny crowd with songs like "Us Against The World" and "Disco Hippie", in this debut Play definatly has spunk and charisma, but lacks song quality. If I were you, I'd go find the European version of this CD with quality bonus tracks like "To Live And To Die For" and "Watch Me Now". Notable tracks on this version include "Cinderella" and "Remember To Forget". It's a bit of an awkward mix of styles and remakes and original cuts, but if you truly like Play you'll enjoy it anyway.

I'll be honest...I'm the biggest Play fan of my age (I'm almost 18) that you'll find anywhere. When I first heard "Us Against The World," I hated it. My introduction to the song was from the music video snippet they used to play on the Disney Channel, and it was only the first verse and chorus. Anais's voice was nasally and annoying, and the girls seemed altogether juvenile and pretentious.

Then I bought my sister the Lizzie McGuire TV series soundtrack, and heard the song in its entirety for the first time. When I heard the end of the bridge, where Faye sings, "it's here with you that I belong," I said "Hey, one of them can sing!"

At the request of a friend of mine, I finally bought the mini-album. Awaiting me were seven surprisingly good tracks! Well, actually six...I don't like "Hopelessly Devoted;" it's bland and again, Anais's voice is a drawback. The song "Cinderella," with its creative lyrics and infectious music, is the best track on the album, and it's probably still my favorite Play song. In fact, they can all *sing,* but Faye's voice is the obvious standout on this album.

Despite the undeniable awesomeness of the songs on this album, their voices were still immature, and those who have heard their follow-up efforts "Replay" and "Don't Stop the Music" know that on this mini-release, the girls of Play are mere shadows of the women they have become. However, this CD is still very much worth a listen...if you enjoy pop music, give it a chance. You won't regret it.
