Cher: Believe (1998)Wednesday, May 11, 2005
In January of 1998, Cher had received the most devastating news she'll ever receive in her lifetime: The Death Of Sonny Bono. Cher was asked to give Sonny's Eulogy at his funeral. Through her grieving tears, Cher had gotten through it.
On November 10, 1998, Cher had released her next album entitled, BELIEVE. This was the album that brought our Dark Lady back into the game. Throughout the 60s, 70s, & 80s, Cher had been a true Diva, but with this album, Cher's Divahood was etched in stone and there is no way to renounce that. This album is truly amazing, without a doubt. It displays Cher's use of Pop & 90s Retro Disco sound & Club Techno sound. Every fan on this planet, or even in this galaxy should have this album.
BELIEVE
The first single from the album. And the album's title track. When I heard this song for the first time, I thought to myself, "Who is singing this song? This song is f***ing awesome". I knew the voice sounded so familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it. When the radio DJ said that it was Cher, I nearly had a heartattack. This song is just absolutely incredible. As it would turn out, this song is Cher's fourth #1 hit single.
THE POWER
This song is very cool, but it is a little weak.
RUNAWAY
Why is it every song that I seem to favor never released as a single? This is one of my favorite songs from this album. I cannot help but listen to this song right after hearing the album's title track.
ALL OR NOTHING
The fourth & final single from the album. I had never really listened to this song, until earlier in April of this year. I know I'm late. It was one of those songs that I seemed to have skipped over. But when I actually took the time to listen to the whole song, I was completely mesmorized by how incredible it was.
STRONG ENOUGH
The second single from the album. This song is the best example of Cher's use of 1990s Retro Disco sound. I love this song and you all should too. The video for this song is just spectacular, but the blonde hair is not for Cher. For me, Cher's hair color looks best in Black, Rusty Red, or Blood Red.
Dové L'AMORE
The third single from the album. I love Spanish influenced ballads, just like this one. Cher is not the only artist to record a Spanish influenced ballad. Madonna, I think, was the first with "La Isla Bonita" & "Spanish Eyes". Mariah Carey followed in 1997 with "My All". Toni Braxton would have hers in 2000 with "Spanish Guitar". This song is just outstanding.
TAKIN' BACK MY HEART
Pretty much the weakest song on the album.
TAXI TAXI
The beat is pretty repitious, but it is real catchy and I love it. It is another one of Cher's, "Get up off your a** and start dancing" songs.
LOVE IS THE GROOVE
Another song that should have been released as a single. Damn it! Love this song.
WE ALL SLEEP ALONE (Remix)
Original version from the album CHER (1987). I am not sure as to why the remix of this song was included her. I guess Cher wanted another Disco sounding song to close out the album and I guess that remixing "We All Sleep Alone" was the only song she could think of. Great remix.
If you are a Cher fan and you do not have this album in your collection, then, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?!?! Time is running out. Get this album now, before it's too late.

Do You Believe In Life After Love
A strong enough return to form (and the charts) for CherTuesday, February 15, 2005
Cher's mid-nineties Warner contract had already served her well with the 'It's A Man's World' record released only a few years prior to 'Believe'. Although it was a commercial flop, the album gave Cher a much-needed new direction after the schlock rock sound of the Geffen years became downright insipid on the 1991 offering 'Love Hurts'. But in true Cher style, she changes direction as often as her wigs, and the club success of Junior Vasquez's 'One By One' ushered in a whole new era of Chermania.
Cher circa 1998 was announced in a flurry of robotic verses, a soaring chorus, and thick throbbing beats. The irrepressible 'Believe' became Cher's biggest hit in a decade, as well as being one of the most thrilling records of her career. The album of the same name had a lot to live up to, and for the most part it does. Produced largely by then leaders of the European dance scene Metro, 'Believe' runs the gamut of the dance genre and covers all possible bases. 'The Power' is an adult-contemporary midtempo given a more funky production from Junior Vasquez, 'Strong Enough' unashamedly recalls the hedonistic days of Studio 54 in the seventies, and 'Dov'e L'Amore' is the obligatory Latin dance track. The album's highlights though are the more cutting edge cuts which avoid pastiche and tribute, adopting a decidedly darker, atmospheric feel. 'Runaway', the shimmering 'All Or Nothing' and 'Taxi Taxi' (which boasts some deliciously ambiguous poetry) are all stand-outs.
Sadly, the album takes a nosedive towards the end when it becomes blatantly obvious that Warner either ran out of ideas or songs. 'Love Is The Groove' is a dull, repetitive song which does nothing to help the record, and if 'We All Sleep Alone' sounds familiar that's because it's a remix of a song from Cher's first Geffen album. Although the new version is fantastic, it's impossible not to feel slightly short-changed by its inclusion.
Much of Cher's catalogue is hit and miss, and 'Believe' is definitely one of the former. Despite a couple of stumbles towards the end which prevent it from being a 5 star recording, 'Believe' is an engaging and intelligent dance record with some of the best songs of Cher's career. Although the follow-up, 2001's 'Living Proof', was a more cohesive project, the highlights on 'Believe' are more satisfying heights than anything on its successor.
Great Comeback for CherTuesday, January 25, 2005
Cher had been gone and almsot gorgotten for long when she released this album in late 1998 and for a while forward her career was on top again, you might ask why? Sure Cher always had a great voice and charisma, but the reason was the wonderful dance producers including legendary Todd Terry and Junior Vaquez that produced this album and helped Cher back on her feets again with some wonderful songs. Other artists including Madonna tried to succeed with dance but with mixed results. Cher succeeded for sure but with the material here it's difficult to fail.
The magical "Believe" is a wonderful song and one of the best songs of that year. It's catchy and it got exactly what a hit should have, Cher's voice matched it perfect. A immense hit. "Strong Enough" was simular but it had more disco over it, also a good hook. "All Or Nothing" followed the same Neo-Disco formula and "Dove L'Amore" that is Italian was abit more towards the latin genre. "Takin' Back My Heart" is a midtempo song and sound diffrent from the Neo-Disco numbers here. Many of the other songs are very simular to the others Neu-Disco numbers, the last song "We All Sleep Alone" almsot sounds like Eurodance.
If You liked "Believe" and is in too Neo-Dance music then it's defenietly for you, certainly not like older Cher music, but like other big artists Cher took her chance and tried something new that was popular at the time. A good effort with some great songs involved. Recommended.

Do You Believe In Life After Love?Monday, November 01, 2004
In 1998, most doubted that Cher would return with full force into the music mainstream. Though she acted in some successful films between her previous successful song (1991) to 1998, many wondered if she still had more left. By this time, she had been famous for 35 years, starting with "I Got You Babe" as half of Sonny & Cher. Then in fall 1998, the song "Believe" was released. Suddenly, it was commonly played on the radio like the old days. It would later reach #1 on the Billboard Top 100 Singles Charts and stay there for four weeks.
This Grammy-winning single (Best Dance Recording, 1999) got millions of listeners dancing like how nobody had danced to her singles before. Her newfound techno theme gave new meaning to dance music. The vocal robotics in its various spots give the techno theme the additional fun flavor. Such musical combination gave a fresh element to dance music. This single is said by many to be her career best.
Cher's album "Believe" contains all great dance songs like the single of the same name. The grave quality throughout proves that she still had the magic that first made her a star. She takes her newfound dance theme to new levels with each individual song. This album contains many interesting twistes and turns through experiments with various genre elements: disco ("Strong Enough"), latin ("Dov'e L'Amore"), dancehall ("We All Sleep Alone"), and others. All have that catchy element that attracts listeners. Her vocal performances give each individual song the added amazement whether smooth or energetic. Her gift of entertainment takes her far on this album as it always has.
Before the release, she had already been hailed by many as the queen of "fabulous". "Believe" takes that label further. She proves that it's more than her unforgettable outfits that makes her remarkable. Therefore, this album is sure to please many listeners young and old.
