Product Description
Fish out of Water
Album Description
The Yes bassist/ vocalist's sole solo album. Originally released in 1975 on Atlantic, it contains five tracks, including 'Hold Out Your Hand' and 'You By My Side'.
Album Details
British prog-rock group Yes' founder & bassist Chris Squire's lone solo effort. 'Fish Out of Water', released in 1975, features fellow Yes-man Bill Bruford on drums & percussion. This recording effectively demonstrates just how much Squire contributes to Yes' signature sound. 'Fish...' found a big audience on American FM radio and was a college favorite with tunes like 'Hold Out Your Hand', 'You By My Side' & three more.

4 of 5 stars  Prog bass at its best
Thursday, March 10, 2005
Chris Squire's solo shot FISH OUT OF WATER is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy bass playing at its finest. Squire's playing is impeccable on the 5 songs here, with able support from such Patrick Moraz and Bill Bruford. The CD captures the majestic sound of progressive rock well with its ethereal lyrics and soaring, classically influenced themes. Squire does a nice job on the vocals as well, there really is no hesitation at all; just pure confidence in his ability to make the song work. Solo recordings by members of well-known bands are often painful experiences, self- indulgent and pointless; Squire has made one that stands with the best that Yes has to offer.

5 of 5 stars  Progressive Genius! Buy it Now, before it's too late!

What can I say that has not already been said here? I can't say enough good things about this LP. I have it on vinyl. The CD can only bring out the best in an already fantastic performance. Progressive Rock with a hint of Jazz. Moving and inspiring. Techincal Perfection. Songs for the mind, written from the heart. This is a long forgotten gem. A must have for not only YES fans, but for all progressive rock lovers. One of the top 20 progressive records of all time. Squire's Solo Masterpiece. Buy it now. They don't make records like this anymore.I reccommend this LP. And if you are interested in other Progressive Gems from Yes solo artists. I also suggest you check out these LP's on CD: "Steve Howe:Beginnings", "Jon Anderson: Olias of Sunhillow" and "Rick Wakeman: No Earthly Connection"With the attitude of the major record labels, and the passing of so much time, the fact that any of these LP's exist on CD is remarkable. This may be your last chance to remember what good non-commercial music really sounds like. Don't pass this up!

3 of 5 stars  Good but not Great..........
Tuesday, January 04, 2005
I'm a huge Yes fan so I decided to bid on a brand-new "Fish Out of Water" CD on Ebay and won it for only $10 or $11. Track numbers one and four are my favorites as this rest of the CD seems a little boring and repetitious at times. I must agree with most of the other reviewers here and say that Chris's voice is best suited for back-up purposes only. As usual Chris's bass playing is very enjoyable.

5 of 5 stars  First, last, and best

Chris Squire's only real solo album was released around the same time as Jon Anderson's "Olias of Sunhillow" and will probably be forever linked with it as one of the two best Yes-member solo albums. Fish Out of Water is at once both experimental and familiar, overly ambitious and subtle. Despite being rather dissimilar to Yes music in general, you nevertheless get the feeling that if you extracted Squire's essence from the Prog rock supergroup at their height (especially from the epics on albums Tales From Topographic Oceans and Relayer) and nurtured it with jazz and orchestral influences, this is what would result.

The first couple of tracks are good, and are the most accessible of the album, though not quite memorable. Things really pick up on the third track, Silently Falling, an 11 minute melodic rock epic with one of the best instrumental "jams" of the 1970s; then it sweeps though a hauntingly odd-metered jazzy piece called Lucky Seven (I swear he sounds almost like Sting in this piece); and climaxes on Safe, a lengthy, mostly-instrumental canon.

Overall, this is an incredible composition worthy of a space in almost anyone's music catalog. Unlike most other Yes members' solo compositions, Fish Out of Water is an independently accessible work of music; one need not be already a Yes fan or a progressive rock afficionado to appreciate the genius behind this work. Unfortunately, this album was Squire's only solo piece to ever surface, though I have a feeling that any subsequent efforts could only ever pale in comparison to this.
