Half Past Dead
Description
Despite critical roasting and a blink-and-you-missed it theatrical release, Half Past Dead is surprisingly not half bad. Once you recognize this bastard child's recent action-flick heritage (The Rock being the most obvious of a dozen pilfered plot lines), you can kick back and enjoy the unexpected perks that arise when a deep-cover FBI sleuth (Steven Seagal) accompanies a convicted crook (rapper Ja Rule) into "New Alcatraz" prison. A death-row killer (Bruce Weitz) sits on a $200 million goldmine, keeping his secret as a bargaining chip when criminal commandos (led by the ever-cool Morris Chestnut) drop in for a lethally greedy raid. After cutting his teeth on trashy, short-lived TV series, director Don Michael Paul can't do much to help the puffy, career-tanking Seagal, but he's got lively allies in Ja Rule and alleged "has-been" Nia Peeples (forget Lara Croft, this babe rocks), and even legendary action-TV producer Stephen J. Cannell drops in for a cameo. Derivative from the get-go, but fun just the same. --Jeff Shannon

2 of 5 stars  about the movie half past dead......
Monday, May 02, 2005
I have seen this movie before and there are some people whom are disappointed with this movie/film. This, I could say, is not a very nice movie to watch for some especially how this story is set etc. A recommendation to those whom are interested in this genre of movie/film. Enjoy....

5 of 5 stars  100% off the chain!
Monday, April 04, 2005
Steven Seagal hasn't lost his touch at all. He makes an action movie great with all the fighting he does. I don't care how bad people think he is as an actor. Frankly I think he's entertaining. Ja Rule did a great job as Seagal's partner, the very talented Morris Chestnut plays a very believable bad guy, and Tony Plana did a great job as the warden known as "El Fuego." Tons of explosive action and high octane excitement. The sky diving scene is one of the best action sequences of all-time. If you're a pompous and nit picking movie watcher, then you won't like this movie. If you want to watch something entertaining and explosive, then this movie is it. A must have for all action movie fans!

1 of 5 stars  The perfect title to describe Steven Seagal's career
Monday, March 28, 2005
I feel like picking on Steven Seagal today so I'll be open about his worst efforts, one of them being "Half Past Dead".

Hmmm, "Half Past Dead"...what the hell does that mean? When you look at the title of a James Bond movie, even a previous Steven Seagal effort, which contains irony or allusion, it still makes sense when you really dwell on it, but the only signifigance this title could have is to adequately describe Steven Seagal's rapid decline as an actor and as a guy who can't maintain proper care over his own body. The guy can't even sprint down a hallway without sweating profusely and heaving as if his heart were the size of a canned ham. Much like David Bowie or Madonna, Seagal likes to re-invent himself, but where he truly fails is when he constantly thinks he can cut a fat hog in the ass and runs it into the ground with too many movies that communicate the same tired old theme, and that's why everyone has singled him out in the first place.

The only good thing about this and "Exit Wounds" is that he has abandoned his laughable enviromentalist angle from "On Deadly Ground" and "Fire Down Below", but the fact that he now stars alongside "prominent" rappers who want to cut their teeth in the film industry, is questionable. It may have worked with DMX, but Ja Rule's presence here just adds to the anti-matter equation that ultimately makes this movie sink lower than the films it rips off. Here's a breakdown of the plot told through comparison. It's "Bulletproof" meets "The Rock", but without the coherency or action. I don't know about you, but Seagal's career is not only half-past dead, it's all the way dead in my eyes. I hear he's got five made-for-DVD movies floating around like turds in a punch bowl over on the USA Network, and that is a bad sign enough. Avoid this like the plague.

This is a great action film with ja rule and steven segul. They get into trouble when not backing down from beign arrested by the FBI. Segal tries to protect ja and jumps infront of him, but get shot. He was dead for 22 minutes, but comes back to life. (the name of the movie) They both get taken to Alcatraz, but ja thinks segal is dead. They meet again. There is a criminal there who is getting the electric chair over $200 million in gold.A group of commandoes brake in to try and get the secret out of him. Segal has to convince ja and the other convicts to fight with the law. Great movie, and I recommend it to everybody.

I SAW ELVIS A YEAR BEFORE HE DIED. HE COULD SING BUT COULDN'T MOVE CASUSE HE BECAme tired. elvis is alive and he's steven seagal. he's a whale, imagine stallone, or arnold looking like this. and the script sucks. if i have to wait 40 minutes for action on a 90 minute dvd than bye, bye. i should stop reading your reviews and go on my instincs because i've seen more action in the pink panther movies. i was happy that i got this and under seige2. one out of two ain't bad. don't even rent this. waste of time. i waked out. no story. elvis is doing not much , and where's the humor that was in the story that i saw in the reviews. i'm buying OUT FOR JUSTICE AND THE SEIGE and i'm done with him. hey by the way what the hell happened to seagal after exit wounds. he looked alot better then. AND YOU SEAGAL FANS WHEN IT SUCKS IT SUCKS, PERIOD GET OVER IT. WHEN YOUR A KID YOU HAVE A IDOL. AFTER THAT YOU GOT MANY PROBLEMS IF YOU STILL HAVE A IDOL LIKE I SEE IN THE REVIEWS. GET A GIRL OR GUY OR BOTH. EVEN A DOG, BUT PLEASE DON'T TELL ME THERE WAS SO MUCH ACTION IN THIS MOVIE. WHY DOES IT GO RIGHT TO DVD. BECAUSE HE HAS LOST IT AND SO DID ELVIS,STOP EATING FRIED BANANNA WITH PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICHES AND MAY BE, NAH (THANK YOU VERY MUCH)PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!
