The W
Description
The Wu-Tang Clan have slimmed down on their lean and mean third album, both in title and in content. Clearly having learned a lesson from the ostentatious affair that was their last group effort, Wu-Tang Forever, The W weighs in at a taut 13 tracks, with little, if any, extraneous self-righteous solipsism. RZA returns to the boards for all but one track and proves that Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) was no fluke, manipulating ghoulish soul to chilling effect on "Hollow Bones" and dropping (and chopping) thunderous horns at the intro to "One Blood Under W" (which features a stellar turn from reggae don Junior Reid). The album's first two singles--"Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off)" and "Gravel Pit"--are both fierce, propulsive numbers, inspiring the Wu collective--Ghostface Killah and Method Man in particular--to higher energy levels than they've displayed in years. Elsewhere, The W is Ghost's record, especially on the unhinged lament "I Can't Go to Sleep" and the prostrate plea "Jah World." Memorably, Snoop and ODB collaborate to comic effect on "Conditioner," and all the album's cameos--from Redman and Nas to Isaac Hayes and Busta Rhymes--show that the group is still as savvy as ever. On The W, the boasting is earned. --Jon Caramanica

I know a lot of cats is hatin on this album. But if yall ears was really open and you heard these cats degrees of elevation and messages you will see these cats is infinite. Take a good listen to this joint. I guarantee it will change your opinion. People today dont appreciate an album when it comes to listening to it. They hear the beat and wanna groove out. Music is more than that. take heed.

I'M DISSAPOINTED WITH THIS ALBUM. IT SEEMS LIKE THEY WU HAVEN'T SPENT ALOT ON TIME ON TRYING TO MAKE THIS GREAT. I KNOW THESE GUYS CAN DO ALOT BETTER. THEY HAVE SOME HORRIBLE SONGS ESPECALLY "I CAN'T GO TO SLEEP". THE SONGS I LIKE ARE "GRAVEL PIT", "PROTECT YA NECK (JUMP OFF)" AND "CAREFUL(CLICK CLICK". WU TANG FOREVER!!!

4 of 5 stars  The W Strikes Like A Commet
Thursday, January 06, 2005
The above title stems from The RZA'a proclamation on 1997's Wu-Tang Forever (Disc 2-"Bells Of War"), when he states "the next Wu-Tang album isn't gonna come out till 2000...It's gonna strike like a commet). After one listen to The W, you can tell that these cats were out to prove something: that they never fell off. Many fans say that The W is their most commercial album as a unit, but that doesn't really have to be a bad thing. For the first time, Wu-Tang experimented by adding special guest appearances outside of the Wu family (Redman, Junior Reid, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Isaac Hayes, and Busta Rhymes). The results were pretty good. The thing is that the fans wanted another 36 Chambers, and that can never happen because a classic can never be duplicated, but an artist(s) can always make another classic (but not the same type of classic twice). The W is not a classic but it is not a bad album neither. The sinlgles are hot: "Protect Ya Neck" (The Jumpoff), "Gravel Pit" featuring Majestic on the vocals (the same chick who appeared on Ghostface's "Cherchez LaGhost"), "Careful", and "I Can't Go To Sleep" featuring Isaac Hayes. The bad thing about the album is that ODB only appeared on one song ("Conditioner" featuring Snoop Dogg) due to the fact that he was incarserated at the time. The W met Wu-Tang's goals of accomlishment, as it went 2X platinum quickly, and got the mainstream and hip-hop fans alike talking about Wu-Tang again (which began earlier in 2000 after Ghostface released the classic Supreme Clientele). The Wu didn't return to their former spot as hip-hop's favorite sons, but returned to the top nonetheless. However, would they stay at the top for long? Stay tuned....
