Heart - Greatest Hits
Description
If you're pondering the purchase of Greatest Hits for its one new track--an ordinary power ballad penned by Diane Warren and produced by Peter Asher--move on. If, however, you're in the market for a summary of the stalwart Northwestern band's fertile 1976 through 1983 period, this will do. Selections from Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen, Dog & Butterfly, and Bebe Le Strange dominate this 17-song collection, which is fleshed out by "Heartless" (from 1978's Magazine) and tracks from four '80s Epic LPs. --Steven Stolder

Fabulous. Simply put, this cd makes me happy, it has great beats, great lyrics, magic man might be the best song ever, and I've completely fallen in love with it. I think anyone who wants a good array of music should add this to their collection. You can't go wrong with it, and you won't be sorry. I am a new Heart fan myself and was wary about whether I should buy this cd or not, I'm not sorry and you won't be either.

3 of 5 stars  An "okay" Heart compilation...
Sunday, February 27, 2005
Good collection of their earlier hits from the 70's and early 80's comprising of their own songwriting and music. Before the commercially-driven 80's where they were fed other songwriters' tunes (i.e. Diane Warren, Holly Knight, etc.). I give this compilation 3/5 stars for two reasons: 1.) they didn't need to include the A/C "Strong Strong Wind" and 2.) they didn't include the original hit version of "Dreamboat Annie". Instead they include the reprise version, which isn't bad but it's slower and sounds a little depressing. Otherwise, if you're a fan of Heart's earlier music, get this compilation or spend the extra $$$ and purchase "The Essential Heart", which has all of their hits from 70's, 80's and early 90's.

4 of 5 stars  Great band, but this is only half the story...

Greatest Hits (1998.) A Heart hits compilation.

Heart is the band that demonstrated once and for all that women could rock. A better rock and roll band with female members does not exist and never will. Despite numerous changes of members in the band and radical shifts in sound, the band has managed to maintain an audience for many years. Like any popular band, there have been more than a few Heart hits compilations over the years. Read on for my review of this compilation - released in 1998.

Essentially, Heart's Greatest Hits covers the era ranging from 1976-1983. The albums from this era which are covered by the compilation are Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen, Magazine, Dog And Butterfly, Bebe Le Strange, Greatest Hits Live, Private Audition, and Passionworks. The compilation takes the biggest hits from these albums, as well as several underrated tunes. Among the big hits you get are Crazy On You, Magic Man, Kick It Out, Barracuda, and Heartless. In addition to the big hits, you get a previously unreleased track entitled Strong Strong Wind. The track was produced by Peter Asher (half of sixties British pop duo Peter And Gordon.) That's seventeen tracks total, with no filler. And they're all in chronological order (the unreleased track comes first, though, and the live version of Rock And Roll from 1980 comes last.) Unfortunately, as with any Heart compilation, this one's got problems. The obvious one is that it only covers the early years of the band (pre-1985.) Anyone knows that the band had a TON of mid-late eighties hits. There IS a second compilation that covers the 1985 material and beyond, but a single-disc career-spanning collection would have been a better bet, in my opinion.

This compilation is still readily available in stores, and you can probably expect it to be for several years. This compilation and its companion are generally regarded as the "official" Heart compilations.

Final verdict? I REALLY recommend getting all of Heart's albums, but if you're on a budget, either get this compilation and its companion, or just get the two-disc Essential Heart collection. Whatever you decide to buy is entirely up to you - just see to it that you get SOME Heart in your classic rock collection!

4 of 5 stars  Comprehensible collection of Heart firts years

Great album! when Heart in the late 70s and early 80s were more about hard rock, and less about rock stars with the huge sucess they reached after 1984, Wilson sisters were in plenty of their respective skills , guitar and voice , this compilation is eclectic, interesting , musically and lyrically amazing, Zeppeling influence is impossible to deny and actually this two sister show to be proud of this (as live "rock and roll" cover proves) actually if there had to be a version of Zeppelin with women definitelly had to be the Wilsons in charge of this ensamble and fate wanted it happened for our deligth , "barracuda" , "little queen" and the newly recorded "strong strong wind" make of this album a basic piece to be part of every real hard rock collector
enjoy!!!
