Product Description
Oracle8i Tips & Techniques
Description
Oracle8i Tips & Techniques is a technical companion to Oracle8i--the Web-savvy release of the Oracle relational database. It is meant to complement existing knowledge of Oracle8i and is best suited to proficient DBAs and developers.

The book comprises an overview of the Oracle8i architecture, server administration, and application development. The overview documents the major terms and concepts such as databases, ROWIDs, and segments. True to its title, the rest of the book showcases tips and techniques--both documented and formerly undocumented--that help you make the most of Oracle8i. The server administration section includes numerous suggestions pertaining to installation, data warehousing, performance, security, and a number of other subjects. The reader will also learn about a wide range of tips such as backing up statistics and managing data warehouse constraints.

In the application development section there is a boatload of PL/SQL, SQLJ, JDBC, and Enterprise JavaBeans tips. Each tip and technique is explained concisely, usually with a companion piece of code to illustrate the approach.

New users of Oracle8i may very well find themselves lost in this text since it is really targeted at those with a solid foundation in the product. However, for users wanting to take their expertise to the next level, this book provides hundreds of useful insights. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Oracle8i overview, installation, rollback segments, JVM, manageability, performance, execution plans, data warehousing, security, PL/SQL, JSQL and JDBC, Enterprise JavaBeans, interMedia Text, interMedia multimedia.

5 of 5 stars  Excellent book!

Has lots of hands on tips, I mean REAL tips, not just recites from Oracle Manual. I sold most of my Oracle books but this one is to stay.

5 of 5 stars  Very Good for Oracle8i New Features
Tuesday, August 07, 2001
This book covers exclusively Oracle8i new features. It's an excellent book if you are already familiar with Oracle8 and want to learn the 8i new staff. It's also full of very interesting tips not easy to find elsewhere.

2 of 5 stars  Good examples, but not well written
Saturday, October 07, 2000
Save your money on this one. I liked the overview of the ORDBMS in Chapter 1, and the treatment of partitioning, but overall this collection of tips is just that-- a set of tips for the expert minus a well-written orientation to new features. If you can glean more information from examples rather than the surrounding text, then this might be a good reference, but don't count on it to teach you the neat stuff in Oracle 8i.

4 of 5 stars  Very good to upgrade to Oracle8i
Wednesday, August 23, 2000
I am a senior DBA for a major international bank and Oracle OCP. The objective of this book is to show new feaures of Oracle8i, which is something you would normally only get in an Oracle classroom. The topics are very straightforward, practical and illustrative. However, there are some mistakes, and some areas are not satisfactory covered. I particularly missed a chapter on version migration. But, on the whole, a great book.

2 of 5 stars  Materialized View Section Needs Updating
Tuesday, July 04, 2000
I only looked at the section on Materialized Views and must say that its one of the few books to cover this topic in some detail. However, readers should be aware that some of the parameters mentioned in the text are not correct and therefore will not work.
