20 years later, Purple Rain still amazesFriday, April 29, 2005
For the 20th anniversary of it's release, Warner Brothers re-released the classic "Purple Rain" on DVD in two disc form. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the previous and more boring DVD that had almost no features. "Purple Rain" is a semi-autobiographical tale about Prince's journey to fame. It is almost identical to Eminem's "8 Mile" and still holds it's own today as one of the greatest rock films ever. This DVD was packed with featurettes, music videos, the trailer and the ultra rare 1984 MTV premiere party. The film was also remastered and takes you back to 1984 to re-live the magic. "Purple Rain" is a must see!

Prince is a musical geniusTuesday, April 19, 2005
I love this movie. This DVD is exceptional, because it provides you with a second DVD of extras that are a treat. Videos, live performances, etc. This is worth a purchase. Don't buy the cheap, Walmart $10.00 copy. Buy this 20th Anniversary 2-disc special edition for your collection. it is a must have.

Just have seen "Purple Rain" for the first time in my life today. I am born in 1985, so I haven't experienced any of the hype for the film back then.
What should I say?
I enjoyed the film and the especially the music all the way through.
I didn't know that so many classic Prince songs actually just came off this film.
The plot of the film is good, although the main eye lays on the rivalary of the two bands and for this matter on their music.
Still I didn't feel that the acting of this "non-actors" was cheesy! The played themselves so why should it?
For me the real winner of this film is Morris Day. I have been a lover of his pimp-funk for several years now and always assumed that he was the baddest motherf***er around. This film gives proof.
He's acting ( or is it "acting"?) is just FUNNY and you have to listen to his voice and especially to his LAUGH. I ended up skipping back to his laughing scenes all the time. THIS IS BAD FUNK!
Never seen such a self confinced, laughable, funny guy yet - who plays such great funky music.
Morris Day & The Time's performances & scenes are worth the money alone!!!
The special features are cool too. The producer even begins to cry when talking about a certain scene & music in the film. It was touching.
Still, I missed Prince and Morris Day being interviewed and some cut out scenes of the film.
Prince is a genius! I loved that film!

Short-arsed icon!Saturday, March 19, 2005
After reading a 5-star review of this album in a music magazine discussing all-time classic albums, I thought I'd buy it out of sheer curiosity (and it was on sale in the music shop). I listened with inquisitive ears... and was completely compelled and hooked by the music from start to end... so the next logical step was to see the film they came from...
I'm now officially a secret prince fan! (Let's face it, it's not cool to admit this in modern times!) Not because of his acting (which he did try his hardest) nor the plot of the film (if there is one) or anything like that, but simply for those mesmorising performances that blow you away! I can't get enough of seeing him prancing around with all that energy doing those great songs and guitar solos.
Being a fan of modern music, I can't help but feel there's something raw and edgey missing out of it that was present in those songs and performances... oh well! Just buy the DVD for the ass-kicking performances.
I like the bit in Darling Nikki when he's (erm...) simulating a sexual action on top of the amps (... not one for the children!) or the bit in I Would Die 4U where he starts shuffling his legs around the stage and rubbing his hand all over himself, or the bit in Let's Go Crazy when he's performing a funky guitar solo whilst in silhouette with lights around him, or that melodramatic OTT screaming bit at the end of The Beautiful Ones where he's rolling around the stage... I can hardly catch my breath!
All in all, you should buy the DVD... the films lame but is carried off by these shows that will leave you hyperventilating!

Purple Rain: Prince DominatesFriday, March 11, 2005
"I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted one time see you laughing
I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain..."
Once you hear the music, you want to see the movie. Purple Rain is jam packed with smash hits. The soundtrack includes a total of nine songs, and four of them were chart topping. The four best-selling titles are Lets Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, and of course Purple Rain. Even though only Prince sings on the soundtrack, there are other performers in the movie.
In addition to Prince, two other popular acts are included in Purple Rain. To bring variety to the music, the other performers played different styles of music. Morris Day and The Time sang The Bird and Jungle Love, which are both hip-hop/rap styles. The other group was Apollonia 6, and they sang the song Sex Shooter. The style Apollonia 6 sang was R&B.
Furthermore, Prince's character, The Kid, dominated the music in the movie. Prince is deserving of the role because many things that happened to his character in the movie are similar to what has happened to him during his life. Case in point, in the movie The Kid did not have a strong relationship with his father and Prince did not have a very good bond with his father either. Prince is an emotional person; therefore, he was an outstanding choice for this role.
Finally, Prince's character has many mixed emotions. In one particular scene The Kid shows mixed emotions when Apollonia buys him a guitar that he wanted. After he thanks her, she tells The Kid that she wants to join a girl group that his rival was putting together. He becomes angry out of jealously. As a result from all these struggles, in the end there is a good lesson. No matter how hard things get, never give up.
Purple Rain is an excellent movie. It is an extraordinary movie because of the soundtrack, various artists, the acting, and the struggles the characters face during the movie. I recommend this movie to any fan of diverse music genres.
"But I'm here 2 tell u
there's something else... the afterworld
A world of never ending happiness
U can always see the sun
day or night..."
