Great Music!Saturday, April 09, 2005
This cd has all the great songs from the movie. I love it! Alanis Morissette does especially well, as well as Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd. I would have liked to hear Ashley Judd sing more, but the little singing that she does is great.
One thing missing from the cd, however, was the opening song from the movie, "Anything Goes." Ashley Judd did do a little bit of singing in that, and it would have been nice if it was included on the soundtrack.

It's Wonderful, MarvelousTuesday, April 05, 2005
Music is such a big part of my life and when I first viewed the DVD, I always remember my father saying that Cole Porter was one of his favorites. I can see why. I've grown up listening to Frank Sinatra singing his tunes and I feel that all the artists did a wonderful job recording the music. Even Kevin Kline packed a powerful acting and singing performance, yes singing performance as well. I mean, look at Fred Astaire, he was a fabulous dancer, singer, not really, but guess what, he could carry a tune and he got away with it. He made us fall in love with all those beautiful songs he sang. So did Gene Kelly. I think Kevin Kline was marvelous and I'm dissapointed that the CD doesn't include his version of "Easy to Love". I also think Ashley Judd was superb as the elegant Mrs. Porter and I would have liked to see her sing some more. I'd love for this movie to become a Broadway play. I'd go see it, so would my husband; it would be exciting if it included the original cast.
I would encourage anyone who likes Cole Porter to buy this CD. You'll fall in love with it.

The people who complained about this CD don't get it. What point would it make to get a Sinatra sound-alike and use the same arrangements from years ago? This CD also has much better sound than the old recordings. The arrangements are spirited and fun, and the vocal performances are unique and somewhat typical of Broadway, where not all performers have great voices. My wife and I love it, and I bought one for my parents, and they love it. Great songs, great sound, terrfic, lively arrangements. And the movie is terrific. We have the DVD as well.

Perfectly lovely!Saturday, February 26, 2005
I love the CD almost a much as I loved the movie. I have watched it 4 times and I never watch a movie more than once. I listen to the CD everyday. I think everyone is way to critical...listen and watch with your heart...or maybe I'm just way to sentimental. Anyway I love it and now want to hear more Cole Porter

FLEE!! Flee! Cover your ears and run!Friday, February 18, 2005
Now I'm ALL for the hollywood revival of the genre. I'm even open to interpretation - I loved "Chicago," if only for the fact that it introduced a snazzy musical to a new generation and sponsored a mini-revival of flapper attire. I may be a 30s jazz singer who has spent the better portion of her youth trying to perfect the vintage sound and look, but I thought that cast did a fine job. Probably a much better job than I. This, this is disastrous. This is the quintessential example of the hollywood formula, and it comes to the most repulsive of results. Alanis Morissette made me feel ill. It's not even the retention of her characteristic nails-on-chalkboard tired caterwauling with which she vocally approaches the number, its the blatent disregard for how ANY successful singer of the era might have done so. I'm not saying Renee or Catherine sounded like Ruth Etting or Annette Hanshaw, but at LEAST they gave it a college try, played with the genre, and treated it with respect. You could almost hear the musicians in the background, straining, pulling her along. I wish they had just played over the TOP of her. Why bother to immaculately costume actors to the era, if they can't sing? Let alone if they don't bother to SOUND honest to the look and feel that the set designers and historians painfully constructed? I could not even stomach more than a few minutes of the movie, and literally listened to each track no more than 30 seconds per. Call it masochism that I even bothered at all. I think Ashley is a lovely woman, but even her husband has gone on record as saying this is not her best work-- she didn't think so either. The production on this had not an ounce of the time and preparation that is clearly demonstrated in other similar "starlet-turned-singer" works of late (even Evita made this look pitiful). Very very sad to me, that the opportunity to cast, produce, and vocally COACH these stars was traded for budgets, names, and production deadlines.
