pretty much Live at Leeds, but cheaperThursday, March 10, 2005
The Isle of Wight and Live at Leeds have basically the same track listing, but Leeds is maybe a little better. I decided to get this because I could get it cheap, and boy is it awesome! It's everything you could want in a Who concert, the live versions of Tommy songs top the studio versions in my opinion. One of my favorites is "young man blues," one of the most raw and intense versions of the song is found on here. What follows is a buying guide in accordance with this cd:
Live at Isle of Wight has only a couple songs off of Who's Next, so you can get both this and Who's Next without a lot of track repeats. More than half the songs are off of Tommy, which you should also get because it is nice to have both versions of the songs. Quadrophenia is of course not represented on here, so it should be acquired also. Many of the songs on here are sample songs off of their first few cds, "magic bus" being a nice rare addition to the more well known songs. You do not need to buy any older cd's, because songs like "my generation" are given representation in the Isle of Wight playlist. But you should get Who's Better Who's Best for a good overview of older stuff.
The Who-'Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival,1970' (Sony)2-CDSaturday, February 19, 2005
A suberb archive 2-CD release that took me my complete surprise when I first discovered it.Some say it's a bit similar to the band's 'Live At Leeds' album which took place a short time prior to 'Live At The Isle...'.No matter, both are worth having.Sound mix couldn't be better.Total of thirty songs performed in nearly an unforgetable two hour set.Several cuts here I simply don't remember right off hand, like "Heaven And Hell","Water","Naked Eye" and "Fiddle About".Looks like pretty much most,if not all of 'Tommy' is played here.Cuts I enjoyed the most are "I Can't Explain","Young Man Blues","Amazing Journey","The Acid Queen","Shakin' All Over","My Generation" and "Magic Bus".Comes with a twenty-page full(and I do mean FULL)color booklet packed with unseen photos, text and memorbilia.A must-have.Most highly recommended.
Just As Good As Leeds, No QuestionSunday, January 09, 2005
Many have written about how this performance is weak when compared to Live at Leeds, but I would most certainly disagree. Entwhistle is brillant as always, and Daltrey sounds fierce, especially during some of the Tommy stuff. The jams on "Water" and other tracks are to die for. This record shows Townshend doing more improv than the note for note perfection of Leeds. Add to that a wonderfully distorted sound mix and this album just feels more raw than Leeds, more dangerous. Listen, the Who were supposed to be a loud, distorted and angry band live. And for all those who say Moon's playing was off that night...could you do any better? NO? Then silence yourselves. If there is any fault I can find with the performance is that Pete's voice is pretty ragged, but again this makes the album feel more raw and intense. You can feel Townshend reaching down inside to get those notes. I must say that the Tommy stuff comes off much much better than on Live at Leeds (Deluxe Edition). The Tommy CD on Leeds uses way too much noise reduction and makes the whole performance sound very weird. Not only that, Roger Daltrey was brought in over 30 years later to re-dub the entire "Listening to you..." chourus at the end of Tommy! Ummmm excuse me? I have heard the original Leeds bootleg and his vocal was fine to begin with. The performance of "We're Not Gonna Take it" on Isle of Wight is simply earth-shattering, the best Ive ever heard. So for all those people who claim that Leeds is the end all Who concert and shove this one down the trash, think twice...and for all those who feel this CD mix is weak, you simply arent playing it loud enough!

Might I add that Keith's drumming on here is amazingly impressive, being that he was on pain killers due to a broken ankle?
One Of The Best Compared To Live At Leeds! Tuesday, August 31, 2004
I love the Who live at London England at the festival The Isle Of Wight-1970. This is number 2 compared to LIVE AT LEEDS the best who album. The new WHO DVD does not include the full performence as this CD does. The music is great on this CD full of blues, and heavy rock n roll. Dont get fooled again! This is the best release of the isle of wight without a doubt. I love the song Young Man Blues, also I love the jam on Water. You want only the best? I prefer THE WHO Live At The Isle Of Wight. Other than the music their is a great booklet including many rare photographs very cool. Rock On!
