Product Description
Garmin City Select v5 CD-ROM Map - North America
Description
MapSource City Select v5 for North America includes full-coverage maps throughout the United States as well as select Canadian coverage. This updated product provides access to all regions at no extra charge. It's included with the purchase of a Garmin GPS V Deluxe or iQue 3600 (so don't buy this if you already bought those unless it's a gift!), and it's compatible with the GPSMap 196.

Version 5 features include trip and waypoint management functions (which work with nearly all Garmin GPS units, excluding the GPS 100 family and panel-mount aviation units), full coverage for metro and rural areas throughout the contiguous U.S., supplemental coverage of Alaska and Hawaii, and select coverage of Canada.

You'll enjoy detailed maps containing highways, interstates, and business and residential streets, with turn restrictions, speed categories, and other navigation features.

Especially convenient is the ability to create automatic, point-to-point routes in MapSource, the GPS V Deluxe, iQue, and GPSMap 196. Over five million points of interest include food and drink, lodging, attractions, entertainment, shopping, emergency services, post offices, camp grounds, movie theaters, and other spots.

Expanded Canadian coverage in v5 includes: Alberta (Edmonton, Banff, Calgary); British Columbia (Kelowna, Vancouver, Victoria, and Whistler); Ontario (London, Toronto-Golden Horseshoe, Ottawa-Gatineau, Stratford, and Winsdor); and Quebec (Montreal, Ottawa-Gatineau, and Quebec city).

Note: North America City Select v5 CD map data must be unlocked prior to use, which can be done via Garmin's unlock pages or by phone. When using a locked MapSource product, the real-time track plotting function will work only with a valid unlock code for the GPS unit being used.

5 of 5 stars  Worth Buying Garmin
Thursday, December 09, 2004
I just applied the patch 6.01 from v6.0 Its really worth buying this. Even I contacted them twice requesting new feature when I was using v6.0...and its there in 6.01. Only annoying thing is the vehicle Vessel/Pointer will not stay in the direction we go...I expect the vehicle Point should stay in the direction we go and the Map should automatically change or move. I would request GARMIN to add this feature in their very next release. But Still I give 5 Stars

Thanks to GARMIN

4 of 5 stars  Don't buy this, there is a newer version out.

Do not buy this product (City Select v5). There is a newer version out (v6).

I have v5 and it is quite good. You load it onto your computer's hard drive, then select just the map sections you want to download to your GPS. I use it with a Garmin GPSMap 60CS. The mapping capabilities of the software are excellent, and it includes TONS of detail. For example, the 7-11 two blocks from my house is included. With City Select mapping software, you can do a search for any type of business or park or whatever type of place within a specified radius, and it will give you a list of places that meet your search criteria. Very handy for trips to unfamiliar cities, or unfamiliar parts of your own city.

The few times I've contacted Garmin's tech support, they responded quickly.

The only downside of GPS mapping software is the cost. Garmin designs their GPS units so that they work only with proprietary Garmin mapping software. This allows them to take advantage of their customers by overcharging for the mapping software. However, this practice is common in the consumer GPS industry, Garmin is not the only company doing it. Check out other company's GPS mapping software, it is equally overpriced.

4 of 5 stars  Mixed feelings. Points of interest great. Mapping just OK.

I was disappointed in this software particularly when comparing it to Microsoft's Streets and Trips which had far better mapping details and features at a considerable savings. To give this program its due however I must admit that there are significantly more points of interest (restaurants, hospitals, hotels, etc.) available in this program than its Microsoft counterpart.

Garmin requires you to purchase THEIR maps for all their GPS units. And those maps are expensive and this product is no exception. I bought v 6 which is an updated version of v 5. I understand that you can upgrade for free.

Streets and Trips by Microsoft is an elegant and intuitive program providing you with powerful mapping tools that are, IMO, far better than those provided by Garmin.

Garmin does have an edge on the number of points of interest but in all other facets of the mapping program Streets and Trips excels IMO.

I disliked the Garmin solution and their forcing me to buy their expensive maps so much that I bought Microsoft's Streets and Trips with GPS Locator for under $100 and found a solution that, for me, works much better particularly in an automobile.

Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent program when used in conjunction with the Garmin hardware. My major complaints are the pricing of the software, the mapping details aren't as good as Streets and Trips, and other mapping functions including but not limited to panning and zooming work better in Streets and Trips. Again, the number of points of interest and the ability to plot a course to any of them with a touch of a button are superb features of City Select.

If you are buying this program exclusively because you own a Garmin GPS then, rest assured, this product will fulfill your needs admirably. If however you are looking just for a mapping program then Microsoft's Streets and Trips would serve you better at 1/3 the price. And if your GPS needs are limited to the automobile and you don't need a handheld solution then Microsoft's Streets and Trips with GPS Locator at less than $100 offers an incredible value!

5 of 5 stars  Very Detailed Street Maps
Monday, August 02, 2004
I use City Select v6 with my Garmin eTrex Legend C. The details included with this program are incredible. It even has phone numbers for businesses, gas stations, restauraunts, schools, places of worship, etc. The latest version is v6, and you can get a free upgrade from v5 at Garmin's website. V5 is a couple years outdated, but v6 was only released a month before this posting, August 2, 2004. The detail provided is incredible, it was certainly worth the money.
